Cinefilm conversion with the Müller HM73 framescanner
The Müller HM73 framescanner turns every frame or image of the cinefilm into a photo with the resolution of HD quality. Convert cinefilm with the Müller HM73 framescanner is scanning the cinefilm directly on the emulsion side with a high resolution camera, without using mirrors or a prism. The film is not transported by the sprocket holes as been done in a conventional cinefilm projector, but is synchronized by means of a electronic laser. The laser scans the sprocket holes and ensures that a full-resolution photo is taken of each frame passing by. When all frames (images) have been scanned, they are put together again in the computer and a perfect copy of the original is created and the best result is achieved.
The number of frames per second with which the original cinefilm was made is also used to realize the converted result.
Wetgate scanning of the cinefilm
Scratches (also called Cables) and Crackle as damage may have occurred with the cinefilm.
Scratches or Cables are often caused by projecting the films on a dirty cinefilm projector. Cinefilm projectors with automatic cinefilm loading may also have been the cause of this.
Crackles are very small (hairline) cracks in the emulsion that are often caused by shrinkage of the emulsion in relation to the carrier and are permanent disturbances. Wetgate scanning has been developed to make these two damages less visible during the scanning process.
This is frequently used in professional digitization of the cinefilm, but it is a costly and time-consuming affair. The Müller HM73 framescanner has its own system, whereby the films are scanned Wetgate in a simpler way. Wetgate scanning makes the film more transparent and also provides better details of the result.
Method of cinefilm conversion
The conversion of the cinefilm can be done in various ways. Because we use the Müller HM73 framescanner, we can deliver the best quality. However, many scan companies are using modified cinefilm projectors and record the projected images with a video camera. As result, image flickering occurs and a brighter part in the middle (hot spot) can often be seen from the cinefilm projectors lamp. There are also specially built devices for cinefilm conversion which are better than the cinefilm projector method. Nevertheless, they deliver a dull image with less detail and do not achieve the quality of the Müller HM73 framescanner.
